It all started in 1977, when a young man full of determination, evangelist Edir Macedo, started his first meetings named “Crusades for Eternal Way”, in a small gazebo in Jardim do Meier, Northern suburb of Rio de Janeiro. With no structure, and using only an old speaker and a small keyboard, preaching was done in open areas for a small group of people every Saturday evenings. With great struggle, Macedo always believed in his purpose of spreading the Gospel not only throughout Brazil but also to all sides of the world Those crusades were growing in number and more members were joining the group. Meetings took place in an old cinema hall called Bruni Meier, and then moving to Ridan, located in the suburb of Piedade, north of Rio. Meetings then moved again to a small warehouse in Abolicao, where it was used to be a funeral parlour, where officially the UCKG was born on the 9th of July 1977. Many people considered Macedo’s actions to be sort of crazy, since the rental was exceedingly expensive. But such audacity made possible the transformation to thousands of people. |
